One of the greatest oil spills in history happened in Alaska, in Prince William Sound in 1989. To date, an estimated $630 per gallon have been spent cleaning up the 10.8 million gallons of oil spilled as well as on remedial efforts to rejuvenate the ecosystems affected. A result of poor safety precautions and human error, its effects continue to be felt to this day.
